If you need to test system-level services such as transaction, EJB-specific security mechanisim, the only way is to use in-container test. But for some container-indepent function, i think out-of-container unit testing is enough, for example, testing SLSB units. For me, the out-of-container testing has the first priority: it is easier to implement, speed is much faster (w/ AS starting overhead).
